CFP: David Hume and Political Realism for Societate și Politică
Invited editors: Tamas Demeter and Gabor Zoltan Szucs
Conflict is the essence of politics, and it is about power in the first place”, “Good institutions cannot replace good politicians”, “Politics is the way it is because human rationality is limited and people are morally imperfect”, or “Political judgment cannot be derived from moral sense or science” – these claims are in the forefront of controversies in both theoretical and practical spheres of politics and are indicative of the stance called ‘political realism’. While similar claims can be familiar in David Hume’s oeuvre, surprisingly little attention has been devoted to his attitude toward such realism.
This issue of Societate și Politică (Society and Politics) is organized around the idea that this perspective could lead to important contributions to interpreting Hume’s political philosophy and understanding its external contexts. We invite submissions exploring how the problems of political realism emerge in both Hume’s historical and philosophical works, how they are grounded in Hume’s science of man, or how contemporary discourses in political theory can shed light on the realist features of Hume’s political philosophy.
Papers no longer than 8.000 words or book reviews no longer than 800 words should be submitted by email to Tamas Demeter.
Submissions Due: 30 November 2015
