Junior Research Fellowship in Early Modern History

Junior Research Fellowship in Early Modern History

Central European University, Budapest

The new platform for Early Modern Studies (EMS) at the Departments of Medieval Studies and History at Central European University Budapest is offering a twenty-four months Junior Research Fellowship for research on a subject related to the historical period between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries. This postdoctoral position forms part of CEU’s Humanities Initiative and is an exciting opportunity to join a collegial and vibrant environment for the study of early modernity, with the freedom and facilities to develop your research and strengthen your position in the academic job market. The specific disciplinary and thematic focus on the early modern period is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose projects speak to the broader research foci of the two Departments, and their related research centers, and complement the existing expertise of the resident faculty (for more information, please visit history.ceu.edu and medievalstudies.ceu.edu).

The primary duty of a Junior Research Fellow is to pursue his/her own research for publication. EMS will provide academic support and peer mentorship for a Fellow who is developing his/her doctoral dissertation into a monograph-length publication and/or is advancing a new independent research project.

The Fellowship includes a 2000 EUR monthly net stipend. The Fellow is also eligible for the reimbursement of a one-off round-trip ticket to and from Budapest in the value of 800 EUR. The Fellow is responsible for his/her own travel arrangements and health insurance.

The Fellow is entitled to a discretionary research allowance of 1000 EUR per year. In addition, EMS provides a lump sum of 2000 EUR for organizing an interdisciplinary workshop or invited talks from scholars whose work is relevant, broadly, to the Fellow’s own research.

We accept applications from candidates who have been awarded their doctoral degree after 1 August 2012 or are about to complete their doctorate. Current doctoral students must provide evidence that they will receive their degree before the start date of the fellowship.

The fellow is required to be in continuous residence for the duration of the fellowship.

Interested candidates should apply via e-mail to advert@ceu.edu including in the subject line the code 2017_003. The application should include an academic CV, a writing sample or one representative publication, a research proposal of not more than 1,500 words and the contact information of three referees. The cover letter should describe research and achievements so far and a statement of what the candidate hopes to accomplish during the tenure of the Fellowship.

The deadline for applications is December 2, 2016.

Starting date: September 2017

Duration of the Fellowship: 2 years
