CFP: Methodology in Question 2014

CFP: Methodology in Question 2014 – International PhD Conference in the History of Science and Ideas

22-23 November 2014, Stockholm University

While issues of theory and method are central to the practice of writing history, such questions are often discussed in isolation from empirical thesis work. This conference provides an opportunity to address methodological problems as have presented themselves in the process of empirical investigation.

PhD candidates are invited to submit abstracts for 15-minute papers in English. Submissions are welcomed from all branches of intellectual history, the history of political, religious and economic thought, the history of science, medicine and technology, and related fields of enquiry. Contributors are requested to use their empirical material as context or framework for discussions of methodological or theoretical issues that transcends the specific enquiry, and which are relevant to scholars working in different areas of the field.

Methodological and theoretical problems that can be addressed include, but are not limited to:

  • Genealogy and referentiality
  • Discourse analysis
  • Conceptual history
  • Hermeneutics
  • Critical theory and critique of ideology
  • Situated knowledge
  • Performativity and praxis
  • Actor-network theory
  • Media archaeology
  • Microhistory
  • Oral history

Please note that papers will be placed in sessions according to the methodological questions raised, rather than on the basis of their respective field of enquiry. Abstracts of no more than 200 words are to be submitted in PDF format to the address miq2014@idehist.su.se before 15 September 2014. State “Abstract submission” in the subject line of the email, while giving the title of your paper, your name, your institutional affiliation, and your preferred contact email address in the body of the email.

Both days will open with a keynote lecture, and the second day will close with a panel discussion in which keynote speakers and invited commentators discuss theory and method with reference to the presented papers.

Keynotes: Jonathan Israel (Princeton University) & Kristin Asdal (Oslo University)
Commentators: Mikkel Thorup (Aarhus University), Solveig Jülich (Uppsala University) & Andreas Hellerstedt (Stockholm University)

Submissions Due: 15 September 2014
